Banjar

Last updated on January 1, 2019

Banjar culture dominates the province of South Kalimantan. Although they are devout Muslims, the Banjar proudly trace their origins to a legendary Hindu kingdom, the Negara Dipa.

The Banjar people seldom move to other areas of Indonesia. They tend to marry and settle near their parents or other relatives in Kalimantan. In Banjar tradition, the wedding ceremony is called by ‘Bansanding’ or ‘Batatai.’ The meaning of ‘Basanding’ is sitting on state, and ‘Batatai’ has a literal meaning of sitting together, just you and me. The picture above shows The Banjar traditional wedding garb, called Bagajah Gamuling Baular Lulut.
