Noun base

The verbs with suffix -kan that are based on nouns mean ‘put or take the object in/to [that base word]. 

For example:

Rootpasar – market

  • Create base word with suffix -kan: pasarkan (Imperative) – to ask someone to market
  • Add prefix me- → memasarkan – to market (transitive verb)
  • In a sentence: Sekarang kita bisa memasarkan produk dengan media sosial .
  • Meaning: Now we can market products with social media.

If the noun is a locative noun it will need preposition

Rootmuka – face

  • With preposition ke- → ke muka – to the front
  • Create base word with suffix -kan: kemukakan (Imperative) – to ask someone to put forward
  • Add prefix me- → mengemukakan (transitive verb)- to put forward, to state, to express
  • In a sentence: Di rumah kami, setiap orang bebas mengemukakan pendapat.
  • Meaning In our house, everyone is free to express their opinion.

Another meaning of suffix -kan with noun base is to cause, to treat or to give the object as [root/base].

Rootrencana – plan

  • Create base word with suffix -kan: rencanakan (Imperative) – to ask someone to plan
  • Add prefix me- → merencanakan – to plan (transitive verb)
  • In a sentence: Kita harus merencanakan masa depan karier kita sejak awal. 
  • Meaning: We have to plan our future career from the very beginning.

Marking the object as an instrument:

Rootikat – tie

  • Create base word with suffix -kan: ikatkan (Imperative) – to ask someone to tie
  • Add prefix me- → mengikatkan – to tie
  • In a sentence: Tina mengikatkan pita ke rambutnya. 
  • Meaning: Tina ties a ribbon to her hair.
