-wan is a suffix that occurs with bases, most of which are nouns, to indicate a person who is regularly associated with(base).

Suffixes -wan and -wati, both borrowed from Sanskrit, are the only affixes in the language which make a gender distinction. The form -wan refers to both male and female unless it is contrasted with -wati, which is specifically feminine.
